About Kau Sai Chau
- Kau Sai Chau, the sixth largest island in Hong Kong, is part of the Hong Kong UNESCO Global Geopark. In the past, villagers on the island relied on farming, fishing, and salt production for their livelihood. Kau Sai Village, with a history of over two hundred years, was once designated as a military area by the British Hong Kong government. One of the island’s key landmarks is Hung Shing Temple, located in the southern part of the island. Built before 1889, it was recognized as an “Outstanding Project” by the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Heritage 2000 Awards and is classified as a Grade III Historic Building. The temple has long served as a center for community gatherings, a school, and a site for celebrating the Hung Shing Festival.
- Just south of Kau Sai Chau, separated by a narrow channel, is Jin Island, known for its striking coastal landforms shaped by years of exposure to easterly winds and sea waves. The island features sea caves, sea stacks, natural arches, and inlets, making it a fascinating destination for exploration. One of Hong Kong’s famous “Four Sea Arches,” Tiu Chung Arch, stands in the southern part of Jin Island. This 30-meter-tall rock arch can be navigated through by boat at low tide when weather conditions permit. From a higher vantage point on the island, the arch resembles the wagging tail of a goldfish, adding to the unique geological wonders of the Geopark.
