About this tour:
- Explore the amazing Yan Chau Tong Marine Park in close proximity with kayak, and have fun delving into all the geosites and beautiful sceneries all day long!
- The Yan Chau Tong Marine Park Discovery Tour is a full day tour. Our internationally qualified instructors will first bring your group to the Yan Chau Tong Marine Park by boat, passing the famous Devil’s Fist and Hung Shek Mun geosites along the way. After arriving at our destination, we will switch to kayak in order to explore the nearby geological landscapes (including Fu Wong Chau, Sai Lau Kong, Yan Chau, Tsing Chau Lek and Crooked Island / Kat O) in close proximity which you can’t normally do so by boat. After the exciting adventure, our instructor will then bring the whole group to the Crooked Island (Kat O) to have a relaxing afternoon. We will disembark, explore the villages, and enjoy a wonderful lunch in the peaceful island before returning to Kei Ling Ha Water Sports Centre.
- Yan Chau Tong Marine Park is part of the UNESCO Global Geoparks Northeast New Territories Sedimentary Rock Region where sites and landscapes of international geological significance are managed and legally protected under the “Country Parks Ordinance” and “Marine Parks Ordinance”.
- *All of the Blue Sky instructors are qualified by the International Surfing Association (ISA) and have years of touring experience.
About Yan Chau Tong Marine Park:
- Backdropped by cascading hills and protected from the ocean on four sides, this tranquil harbour known for its temperate microclimate and calm seas is fittingly called Double Haven. Situated on the northeast coast of Plover Cove Country Park, Yan Chau Tong’s lush mangroves and seagrass bed attract an abundance of marine life, as well as visitors who flock to enjoy the area’s geological wonders and picturesque hiking trails.
- Originally formed by volcanic eruptions, millions of years of erosion and weathering have created a stunningly diverse coastline that ranges from sandy bays to rocky headlands and peninsulas.
- Popular landforms here include Hung Shek Mun, Sai Lau Kong, and Crooked Island (Kat O).
About Hung Shek Mun:
- Hung Shek Mun, also known as the “Red Rocky Shore”, is a hidden & unique stretch of reddish coastline on the east end of Plover Cove Country Park at Yan Chau Tong Marine Park.
- This place is noted for the high presence of rich iron, with the deep red colored sedimentary rock bed lining the shores, making it the most unusual and peculiar scenery and photograph opportunities.
About Sai Lau Kong:
- Sai Lau Kong was once a thriving fishing village in the northeastern coast of the New Territories. Originally, Sai Lau Kong was known as the Rhinoceros, “Sai Ngau.” That explains the name of the nearby lake and hill, named “Ngau Shi Wu” (the Lake of Cow Dung) and “Ngau Shi Wu Shan” (The Lake of Cow Dung Hill).
- The Sai Lau Kong Formation is thought to be the final expression of Middle Jurassic volcanism belonging to the Tsuen Wan Volcanic Group.
About Crooked Island (Kat O):
- Kat O is one of the largest islands in the northeastern waters of the New Territories, with an area of 2.35 km2. Its sinuous shape led to its nickname, Crooked Island (Kat O). The Chinese name, meaning ‘lucky harbour’, originally referred to a single bay, but it later became the name of the whole island.
- Kat O looks across Double Haven to the south and its neighbours in Mirs Bay, Dameisha and Xiaomeisha, to the north, providing views of beautiful, unique and varied landscapes and seascapes. It is a tranquil scenic island with many heritage and historical sites, making it a choice countryside destination.
